Lending Library
The Family Learning Center and Lending Library (FLCLL) opened in
May 2006 and promotes literacy through enjoyable family experiences as well as provides a location for parents and children to spend quality time together participating in learning activities. We added shelving units and furniture to an open space in our Gross Motor Room to house the library.
The FLCLL makes audio, visual and reading materials available to families who might not otherwise have an opportunity to utilize them due to financial constraints. Families are able to make use of resources and materials either in the center or at home. The library will also be used to host quarterly Family and Community Literacy Days that will help families build an informal support network. The goal of the events is to bring members of the community at-large together with the families in our centers for open discussions regarding literacy and early childhood education. Staff members will facilitate group discussions between parents to encourage continued support for reading and learning throughout the year. Staff members are an excellent resource because they can give parents/guardians valuable input and insight into their children's day-to-day activities.
Additionally, as the Linden School expands its services, the FLCLL seeks to aid parents in learning about issues concerning children's health, early childhood education and the importance of literacy and learning during a child's formative years. The Parent Education Program (PEP) utilizes resource materials at parent meetings to discuss early childhood education issues as well as the challenges these families face to maintain a healthy lifestyle and support system for their children. Many of the children in our center come from non-traditional families that do not include extended family members. The parents of these children need an avenue in which to discuss the challenges they face every day as well as build a network of support from other parents in their community that deal with the same issues. The Linden School invites experts in the field of child rearing and/or early childhood education to PEP meetings to facilitate seminars, workshops and an open forum for discussion.
The Family Learning Center and Lending Library has been funded by the Target Stores Community Giving Program and several parent fundraisers.
